Steam is rising over Discworld, driven by Mister Simnel, the man wi' t'flat cap and sliding rule who has an interesting arrangement with the sine and cosine. Moist will have to grapple with gallons of grease, goblins, a fat controller with a history of throwing employees down the stairs and some very angry dwarfs if he's going to stop it all going off the rails . . .

Один из последних романов Прэтчетта. Памятуя, что создавался он, когда Прэтчетт уже страдал от прогрессирующего альцгеймера и при написании ему помогали ассистенты, роман весьма неплох. Это значит, что если вы привыкли в его романах к многополосному сюжету, толчее героев и конфликтам с самого начала - при прочтении этой книги придётся отвыкать. Около половины текста описывают, как и при каких обстоятельствах был построен поезд, какой ажиотаж вызвал и как народ рвался стать причастным к модной диковине. Где-то со второй половины действие стало "завиваться" и потихоньку развиваться. Не думаю, что когда-нибудь захочу перечитать - в отличие от других книг серии про Липвига - но, повторюсь, помня о состоянии автора на момент написания - эту книгу можно назвать его последним литературным подвигом.

Умилительное течение сюжета в первой половине - нет, серьёзно, приятно иногда почитать про как всё у всех хорошо )
