Оруэлл провел некоторое время в Бирме - очевидно, что он был более чем разочарован в империи. В этом коротком романе обнажены практически все недостатки (и ни одного достоинства) британского раджа в Индии. Даже герой романа, Флори, в лучшем случае - заблудшая душа. Другие персонажи - от невыносимых пьяниц до невыносимых фанатиков, от мещан, пробивающих себе дорогу в обществе. Родные персонажи - от жаб и подхалимов до мелких воришек и озверевших проституток. Несмотря на то, что повесть хорошо написана и достойна прочтения (к тому же это острый комментарий антиимпериалиста к империализму), в ней очень трудно найти кого-то по душе.
